Do you need a backup water tank? Slimline v vertical JoJo tanks

If water outages keep stopping your household, a backup tank can keep toilets, taps and showers running until the supply returns. Whether it's worth it comes down to how often you lose water, and what you need to keep going.

Start with what you want to run

A tank for a few toilets and taps is a different job from a system that keeps the whole house running. Decide how long you want to last without municipal water, and which fittings need it. That tells you the size, and whether you need a pump.

Slimline or vertical?

• Slimline tanks suit side passages and tight spaces, because they sit flat against a wall. You pay for the shape, so they hold less for the space they take up lengthwise.
• Vertical standard tanks hold more for their footprint and come in a wide range, from small tanks up to very large storage, but they need more clear space and height.

What else a tank needs

• A level base that can take the weight. A full tank is heavy.
• Access for delivery.
• A connection into the house supply, and a pump if pressure matters.
• Approval from the body corporate, if you're in a complex.

Can you drink the water?

Stored water isn't automatically drinkable. It depends on the source, the condition of the system and the treatment. Filtration should suit how you'll use the water.
