Generator servicing: what a service covers and how often

1 November 2026 · Amptex Projects

A generator only earns its keep when the power fails, which is the worst time to find out it won't start. Regular servicing is how you avoid that.

How often should a generator be serviced?

Follow the manufacturer's schedule for your model, which is usually set by running hours or time, whichever comes first. A unit that runs often will reach its service interval faster than one that stands idle. If you've lost the manual, give us the make and model.

What a service typically covers

  • Engine oil and filters, in line with the manufacturer's schedule.
  • Fuel system and battery checks.
  • Coolant on water-cooled units.
  • Belts, hoses and connections.
  • A test run, including how the unit takes the load.

What to check between services

  • Fuel level, and how old the fuel is.
  • Any leaks under the unit.
  • Ventilation and exhaust clear of windows and doors.
  • A short test run, following the manual.

Signs it needs attention now

Book a repair if the generator won't start, cuts out or drops the load. We repair units whoever installed them, and our electricians check the changeover at the DB board too.
