Toilet blocked or tap dripping: what you can check first

1 November 2026 · Amptex Projects

Some plumbing problems are quick to sort out yourself. Others are a sign of something further down the line. Here's how to tell the difference.

Blocked toilet

  1. Stop flushing. Each flush adds water to a pan that can't drain.
  2. Try a plunger with a good seal over the outlet.
  3. Give it time. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can damage pipes and make the job unpleasant for whoever comes next.

If one toilet is blocked, the problem is probably close to it. If several fittings back up together, or water rises in a shower when you flush, the problem is in the drain. That needs a plumber: see blocked drains.

Dripping tap

  1. Close the isolating valve under the basin, if there is one, to stop the waste while you wait.
  2. Note which fitting it is, and whether it's the hot or cold side.
  3. Take a photo of the tap or mixer, with the brand if you can see it.

Mixers vary by brand and model, so a photo helps us bring or order the right part. See tap and shower repairs.

Running toilet

A cistern that keeps refilling wastes water day and night, and can look like a hidden leak on your water account. See toilet repairs.
